People on colourful towels and deckchairs, dozing, reading and sunbathing. Scattered around them are pulp novels, plastic tools for making sandcastles, snacks, swimming aids, sunscreen, beachwear for the stroll back to the hotel. In the monumental musical installation «Sun & Sea», the audience sees a typical summer beach scene. But this airy perfection is deceptive.
The twenty or so beach guests, who we watch from an elevated gallery, sing a never-ending opera while lounging in the sun. They sing of trivial situations from their lives and touch on ecological macro-topics time and again. The libretto subtly merges memories of the last beach holiday and the consumption of foods imported from faraway countries with natural disasters, climate change and the state of the earth, which can hardly cope with humanity anymore. On closer inspection, the idyllic scenery becomes increasingly threatening. The artificial midday sun, from which the beach guests try to protect themselves with suncream, is no longer warm as summer but oppressive, even dangerous.
The indoor beach opera «Sun & Sea» premiered in the Lithuanian pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale and was awarded with the Golden Lion for the best national contribution. It was devised by three young Lithuanian artists: The filmmaker and theatre director Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, whose film essay «Acid Forest» was shown at the 2018 Locarno Film Festival, the acclaimed author and script writer Vaiva Grainytė and the visual artist and musician Lina Lapelytė, whose performances have been presented at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the Cartier Foundation in Paris. The beach opera is the second joint work of this acclaimed trio. «Sun & Sea» skilfully plays with the ambivalence between trivial daily life and fundamental social criticism − showing that what seems to be harmless is in fact very, very serious.
