Contract Renewed

Matthias von Hartz remains artistic director of the Zürcher Theater Spektakel for another four years. The City of Zurich has renewed his contract expiring at the end of 2021. "Matthias von Hartz succeeds in composing an inspiring mix for the programme of the Theater Spektakel: He skillfully covers the spectrum between avant-garde and popular culture and stands for a high standard, demanding yet pleasurable programme. I am very pleased he continues to be a member of the festival direction", Peter Haerle, director of the Cultural Affairs Office of the City of Zurich, backs up the decision.

Recognising the history of the festival but also the necessity of constant innovation, Matthias von Hartz has successfully refined the programme of the Zürcher Theater Spektakel and set new profiling focuses: He has brought more interdisciplinary artistic works to Zurich and expanded the discursive offer with new formats and series. By providing international artists, such as the British theatre company Forced Entertainment or the French choreographer Boris Charmatz, for the duration of the festival with a venue, he enabled the audience to experience their work from different perspectives. Highlights of the 40th jubilee of the Theater Spektakel in 2020 were the comeback of Anne Teresa De Keersmaker and William Kentridge, artists, who performed at the festival during the 80s.
